Thank
you for choosing UAB Medicine for your health care needs. We are committed to
making your experience at our facilities as pleasant as possible. We understand
how overwhelming it can be to deal with both health issues and billing issues,
so our goal is to make the entire process as easy as possible for you. The
information in this section is designed to help you understand your bill and
answer some common billing questions.
Medical
costs are often unanticipated and not all costs are covered by insurance. Please
know that we have payment plans and, in certain circumstances, financial
assistance programs that can make your payments more manageable. It is our
policy to collect all amounts owed before services are rendered. For
non-emergency visits or admissions, your treatment may be denied or delayed if
your financial obligation is not met before the service date. As noted
elsewhere, we may be able to assist you in managing your health care expenses.
Talk to us before you arrive so that your appointment date is easy and
hassle-free.
Patients with Insurance
Coverage
Please
be advised that there may be certain services provided at our facilities which
are not covered by our contract with your health plan. Please inquire with your
health plan before calling to schedule an appointment. When you visit us, please
bring the proper insurance identification cards so we can bill your insurance
carrier. If you are required to file personally for your company’s insurance, we
will provide you with all necessary forms to file your own claim. When your
visit or hospital stay is completed, you will be expected to pay any charges
that will not be reimbursed by insurance (e.g., co-payments, deductibles and
non-covered services), unless you have made prior arrangements with one of our
Financial Advocates. Because your insurance coverage is a contract between you
and your insurance company, it is your responsibility to obtain any physician
referral and/or precertification that your insurance company requires in order
for your visit to be covered.
Any
services that are not covered by your existing insurance policy will require
payment in full at the time of service or upon receipt of denial from your
insurance carrier. We may also be able to work with you on a case-by case basis
to set up a payment plan for non-covered procedures.
Patients without Insurance Coverage / Financial Assistance
If
you do not have health care coverage, you will be asked to pay the full amount
of your estimated charges at the time of service. If you are unable to pay for
necessary medical care, you may qualify for financial assistance. To determine
if you are eligible for financial assistance, we will ask you to speak to a
Financial Advocate. You may contact a Financial Advocate directly at
